Greetings Plant Lovers, Mystical Creatures and Friends,

This Full Moon in Sagittarius highlights the deep meaning of the concept of “I Seek”, as associated with this 9th house.

LUNAR MUSING: FULL MOON IN SAGITTARIUS

This is a sign that took me some time to understand. In retrospect, I think I just wasn’t ready for it’s lessons, I have Uranus and Neptune in Sagittarius, so I think I am just a late bloomer in that regard, having my Pisces, Leo and Libra so pronounced in my chart. As I have engaged with this sign deeper and explore it through the Tarot as Temperance XIV, I have developed a love and admiration. Not only because some of the women I love and respect have this solar placement, but also in what it has taught me.

Elemental practice takes time to learn. When we open our first books or browse our first websites about the topic we find some basic info… Like elemental water is the emotional realm, air the mind. Sure all this is true, but a lot of the writing fails nuance to the dynamics of the element. Astrology starts to add depth and flavor to the elements with the modes: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. But what the hell does Mutable Earth (Virgo - The Hermit IX) look like? Well my friends, this is where I turn to ecology. Mutable Earth is erosion affected by Air and Water, it is Earthquake, and more so, it is tectonic. The slow shift that we don’t see not feel, yet is happening! Where you stand now, will be different in 100s, 1000s of millions of years from now. Our continents will rearrange themselves as the Earth gives herself a makeover once again.

Understanding Sagittarius took me time, in that I needed to learn about the Fire element.

Aries always made sense, this animating fire, the one that awakens the seeds and livens the plants. It‘s the energy of photosynthesis and cortisol. Rapid fire conversation and egocentricity.

Leo is the flaming heart, the passion, and the flame of desire. It’s the procreative force of our sexuality and the flaming arrow of heroism for the cause of the moment.

Sagittarius, a sign of the coming Winter, it is the activity of the ferments, the invisible microbes preserving our food with life sustaining effervescence. It is tea in a thermos, steaming out into cold air, warming hands on a lunch break. It is the coals our ancestors carried along their migratory path.

Sagittarius is considered to be the philosopher of the zodiac, opposite Gemini, whose moniker is “I Think”, and if you scroll through your Gemini friends they are always the most opinionated of the bunch, they do not always have the experience nor wisdom to back up what they riff… not all, obviously, but it’s a trend. But the polarity of that is Sagittarius, with “I Know” or “I Seek”. This is because of the wisdom that comes from experience. This is the one who has fallen and picked themselves back up, this is the one carrying countless scars yet holds no resentment. The tarot card is Temperance XIV, one of the four cardinal virtues represented in the Tarot. Temperance isn’t just about finding balance and moderation, it is about informed action, learning from others, and most deeply from yourself.

The world today is a frightening place. I look at my feed and the news throughout the day and constantly feel horrified, paralyzed, and useless. This Sagittarius Full Moon is a good time to reflect back on your opinions and see if your experience really matches. Thinking about where you come from, who you were, and what made you who you are today.

I look at folks out there hating, hurting others, and I can’t help but ask myself, “how did they become that?” Who told them to hate? Who told them they are better than or worse than? Who told them that borders mattered or that people on the other side were less than human?

We are not born this way, i really do not believe that. We are taught. I remember the first time I learned about the concept of racism, was when my grandfather, the first born in the US son of Chinese immigrants in 1932, would call my Irish immigrant grandmother that she was stupid, and he would say to me “white people are stupid, remember that, you are Chinese, we are the smartest.” And I couldn’t help but wonder about the other parts of myself that weren’t Chinese? What I am saying is that I didn’t know any different until someone told me so. This is how it is for all of us.

I encourage you all to sit back and remember. When did someone tell you that you were different. That some people are worse or better than others. How did that make you feel? How has it affected you throughout your life and how does it affect you now?

I would love to hear your story if you feel called to share.

While we are at it, I want to share some of my feelings about herbalism. It is a beautiful practice, the imagery we see is idyllic and esthetic in that cottage core kind of way. And we help people, thats why we get into it after all, for ourselves and for our families. On another level Herbalism is also an ethos, one that participates in societal systems. The witches weren’t burned because they fell into line with the status quo. As an herbalist, and as someone who considers themselves pretty informed via various news outlets, independent journalists and scientific literature, I have actually become more and more anarchist. My herbal practice has been the fuel to this deep inner Sagittarian fire in my belly.

HERBALISM IS POLITICAL

“Herbalism is political because it directly challenges authority and power over systems by actively uniting and empowering humans to take the reins over their health, body and community sovereignty.

Why is herbalism shunned or demonized by many capitalist health care systems? It is because once you know the way of the soil, life systems, plants, fungi and your own anatomy and physiology, you come into a deeper awareness of the systems actively working against life. Plants cannot be patented nor owned, this directly contradicts exploitive capitalistic systems.

Herbalism challenges power over governance systems. working with plants and fungi brings us back into relationship with the life systems of the planet that are inheritantly not hierarchical but existing as interdependent layered systems of collective becoming, or emergence.

Power only exists in herbalism when it is poisoned by guru and master perspectives that restricts knowledge from being distributed.”

Away from all the tourists, this is a truly authentic cultural experience you will not find in Tuscany nor Rome!

Whats happening at home?

I went to visit Punta Mona. It was very sad for me. I was walking the paths of memory, seeing my home and great teacher falling down. Feeling the power of the jungle, that of non attachment, the large trees snap in half, the beach takes the shore, the plants you cared for disappear, and the buildings you laughed, cried, taught and loved in are decaying. That is life in rhythm. That is the nature of the world.

I walked the forest just observing, collecting a few plants here and there. Some ornamental gingers, and a Gloriosa Lily that I harvested with my ex alongside a busy Miami highway over a decade ago. And I came across this beauty. The Blue Lotus (actually a lily) in bloom. Just one flower, open to me. One more coming. I picked her and now have her brilliant petals drying for a small personal tincture. I also harvested a few roots, to plant temporarily in a bucket until I can afford to build a small pond.

Plants remind us that there are no borders. As the Blue Lotus takes us to the edges of our inner vision, seeing beyond the material, so the plants cross the boundaries of human creation. And they migrate with us on all our journeys.

Tarot Readings

I have space for readings these next weeks and months

Sharing the Tarot brings me so much joy, and I will toot my own horn and say I am really good at it! This is my magic and this is my craft.

I am grateful if you have made it this far. I am constantly thinking about the folks out there who this writing may touch. I feel you and I am open to you. It would be so great to hear from you. It isn’t my strongest quality in [fast] responses, but I read all your messages and they mean a lot to me. I would be particularly curious to hear if there are any themes you would like me to muse on.

As always, may the good green world hold you in her abundant arms, may she kiss you with gentle breezes and may her waters wash you clean and run clear.

blessed be

sarah marie
