Greetings Plant Lovers, Mystical Creatures and Friends,
I am in Portugal right now, starting the Herbalists & Alchemists course tomorrow. And how that happens is by imagining it into reality. Seeing yourself there, sharing the plants, making medicine, making magic together. Life is both the serendipity of the moment and the potency of our free will in action. The imagination and the intuition to follow your inner stirrings are what bring it all to life.
“Intuition is an inner, unexplainable knowing, that like any muscle needs to be tended and exercised in order for it to be active and vital. It is too common for the modern human to have a severe deficiency and weakness in this particular muscle.”
I recently did both a reading and a wellness consult for a person seeking to strengthen their intuition among other things. I had a lot of different suggestions but my one main was to use the imagination. I am a pisces as I have mentioned many times before, and the imaginarium is one of my favorite places to go. I often feel like I imagine the world into reality. But what is the difference between fantasy and the imagination? For me, fantasy exists outside of the realm of possibility. It is the implausible, at least here on planet Earth. And the imagination exists in what could truly be. This is how I approach a lot of different scenarios, and not just ones with humans, but also in the forest and with other creatures. It is in the imaginal realm that we can see through the eyes of another being, that we can feel the wind on our faces hundreds of meters above the surface. It is how we write story, and make art. We see it into being.
This month we celebrate the Witch’s New Year, also known as Samhain, All Hallows, the Feast of All Saints, and Dia de los Muertos. This is the month of Libra transitioning into Scorpio. Autumn in full colorful fall. It is a time of imagination and magic. A beautiful time to connect with the past and the future. A time to tune your intuition, and get lost in the imaginal. With that, I would like to share a series I created last year, that was deeply moving for me, and very helpful to create. It helped me understand myself in this world right now, and what my purpose is… in Being Witch.
Being Witch Series | October Special

What does it mean to Be Witch?
It is an identity, a lifestyle, a spiritual practice, a political ethos and an esthetic. In this series, let’s look at important concepts, strengths, limitations, ethics and social considerations for being a modern witch.
We have a big responsibility to hold true to the value of personal and communal empowerment as folks who identify with a decentralized and growing spiritual path. Sarah opens up the notion that being witch is only for female identified (it isn’t) and calls listeners to have an acute awareness of cultural appreciation and appropriation. Bringing in her lovely sister, Leah Wu, who raises her children as witch, listeners get some insight to what is means to also raise children on this path.

This Musing was inspired by a request from my friend Farah.

“How do we come to the plants?
Sometimes it is because of an illness that no doctor seems to be able to support. Other times it’s out of curiosity, or from a broken heart seeking ways to bring our beloved back to us. Maybe it’s because we heard a whisper from the woods, or had a dream we could not answer… …I grew up speaking to the elementals, making green man face masks with mullein, and creating whole worlds from my play time in trees. I was not guided in this, there was no school teacher to encourage, and no hippie new age parent setting the standard for my inner world values. It just was, because I had the opportunity to do so…
…These green beings are alive, creatures with their own destiny to fulfill. Unlike humans or other animals who have their own unique personality, plants share a collective personality among their fellows across the globe… Sit before the plant and take some deep breaths. Feel yourself exchanging the essence of each other’s life force, oxygen and carbon dioxide, each dependent on the other. Give space for awe in this sacred process, know that your life depends on this plant’s being. ”

I am grateful if you have made it this far. I am constantly thinking about the folks out there who this writing may touch. I feel you and I am open to you. It would be so great to hear from you. It isn’t my strongest quality in [fast] responses, but I read all your messages and they mean a lot to me. I would be particularly curious to hear if there are any themes you would like me to muse on.
As always, may the good green world hold you in her abundant arms, may she kiss you with gentle breezes and may her waters wash you clean and run clear.
blessed be,
sarah marie
